Something Old and Someone New
You know whut happiness is? It is finding a song I have been in search of for about 40 years or so -- accidentally, no less, and by way of a friend I rarely see and a TV I never watch.
So here's the scoop on that: My friend just happened to drop by and then just happened to mention this show, see? It's on Showtime and it's called "Weeds."
(Yeah, yeah......I know. "Weeds" is in its second season already and where the helluv I been, anyway? Not watching television, obviously.)
So anyway, "Weeds" is about a widowed chick who opts to grow and sell pot for a living. It sounded like mindlessly amusing entertainment to me, and sometimes I have need of that, so I tuned in to watch a rerun. Whoa! Turns out the best part may be that the theme song for this show is "Little Boxes!"
Trying to find this song has been like a lifetime quest for the Holy Grail for me! I first heard it on the radio when I was just beginning to morph into my hippie-punk-rebel-commie-pinko stage and I LOVED it! But I only heard it a couple times and then I never heard it again. And I had no idea who wrote it or sang it. (Probably because it was highly offensive to the majority adult contingent who prescribed the very life the song made fun of.)
Over the years I'd describe the song to people -- "You know, that song about ticky tacky and houses that all look the same!" I'd say. All I ever got for my efforts was an endless sea of blank stares. (That all looked just the same.)
And whut's even weirder, is that I do not actually subscribe to Showtime, I just get it in the living room. I dunno why......maybe the cable guy who hooked us up way back when was incompetent. Or maybe he liked us a lot for some reason and thought he was throwing us a bone. Whutever. The point is, it's gotta be FATE! With a pinch of excellent Karma. Because I'd never have found the song otherwise, because I'd never have watched the show otherwise. (Yo Cable Guy! You ROCK!)
BUT......do ALL things come to she who waits? I dunno yet. I'll let you know if my elusive mechanic ever fixes the CAR he's had for 3 years. Meantime, I shall be listening to "Little Boxes." As soon as I learn all the words, I shall sing along!
And maybe watch a few episodes of "Weeds" to keep the mood from getting too intense. Who knows? Perhaps it will lure my muse home from the nether regions.

Oh Fifi! She *is* perfectly beautiful.... and I have a handsome grandson for her! LOL... funny how things all eventually work their way to a moment of discovery, isn't it?
RYC- I wouldn't have been there no matter what... they didn't call to invite us, just heard about the place and went on a lark.... but Day-um she was lucky!
Oh and isn't it funny you should find the song at about the same time I post about him?
The cuteness overwhelms me....she's just precious
Very kewl about the find too
Little Boxes
by Malvina Reynolds
Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of tickytacky
Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same
There's a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.
And the people in the houses all went to the university
Where they were put in boxes and they came out all the same,
And there's doctors and there's lawyers, and business executives
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.
And they all play on the golf course and drink their martinis dry,
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp and then to the university
Where they are put in boxes and they come out all the same.
And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.
It's great and I sing along now.
You have the most gorgeous grandchildren and this one is no exception! Great genes!
So CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!
I had a similar experience with that "Kites are Fun" song from Free Design. I'm sure I told you that story a few dozen times.
I hated the song, basically, but I've grown to love that group. Very sweet harmonies, sort of like the Association stoked on Percodan.
Yet there was something delightfully subversive just below their chirpy demeanor.
Kind of like you!
Also,
I never heard that song.
So there ya go.
Yes, things do have a way of coming to those patient enough to wait--glad you found it.
Heartwarming photos...Innocence still abides in all its beauty. Thank you.
What a wonderful story, I understand your joy and I rejoice with you. A quest fulfilled, awesome! I have a number of similar quests, not the least of which is identifying a book I read in 4th grade about a buffalo hunt. Google Answers came up dry, but I'll find it some day.
Congratulations! Your granddaughter is (of course) beautiful!
she is adorable.
also, I love that song. a very eccentric marketing professor I had about two years ago introduced the whole class to that song because he loved it so much. I rolled my eyes for about two seconds before I realized I loved it.
Mackenzie is beautiful!
I'm so glad you found that song ... isn't it wonderful (and so rare) when things like that happen?! I have two songs like that ... one I heard on the radio about 10 years ago ... it sounded like an old Motown girl group song and never heard who did it or the title and haven't been able to find it since (I believe it contains the words "dream man"). The other is a certain version of the song "No one knows the trouble I've seen" and I can't remember the tune or where I heard it, only that I'd know it again if I heard it. I've bought a bunch of CDs thinking they included it, then I'll listen and be like, "Nope, nope, that's not it." Very cool that you found it and that the hook up happened to include Showtime -- meant to be!
Bottom to top:
* Adorable pictures
* I hate it when you can't find a song you like.
* I've never heard of the show, either.
What a doll baby!
Malvina Reynolds' version of "Little Boxes" is a good listen, too. I love Pete Seeger. Long may he run.
CRIPES!! Little Boxes, is that the ticky tacky song? I forgot that even existed. I had a Bee Gees song stuck in my head the other day and it was awful, I hope that doesn't happen with this one, could require an intervention or something.
RYC: I suspected he was a wacko but never actually read anything confirming it. I should've known though, to create the religion he created he'd have to be a leaping, screaming, raving, flaming nutjob. I'm going to have to find a book about him. Any recommendations?
If they haven't used it all up by then I send some to Mackenzie when she starts school...
I love Pete Seeger, by the way. What videos remain of him are classic. He's a master of the old banjo style called "clawhammer" or "frailing," which I studied for a time. Few can surpass him.
Yes, unsubscribe to the paper (it's all bad news!) and spend the mornings with your birds!
Even as I was typing that I knew SOMEONE'S mind was going to join me in the gutter.
RYC-LOL...stop being jealous... I don't have a screened in porch... that picnis was at my daughter's...in the cute little 3BR ranch they don't have to pay to live in, its a freakin' job perk.... this is the 2nd job SIL has been offered that included nice housing... in the northeast... I never heard of such a thing up here... but I am so glad for them... they are both 25, have 2 kids and could never in a bazillion years afford the house or the town they live in at this point...but I ,too, love that porch!
